Frequently Asked Questions

We’re confident that the time and energy you pour into your emotional health will positively impact every other area of your life. Our work together is a true investment in your life—through improvement of relationships, child behavior, communication, stress management, and overall life satisfaction and purpose.

We completely understand that seeking help for your mental health is a big commitment, in terms of both time and money as well as emotional energy. It's completely normal to have many questions before taking this important step.

Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive from families considering working with us. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, please feel free to reach out by submitting an inquiry through our contact page. We’re here to ensure you have all the information you need.

General Questions

  • We’re always accepting new clients! Our team is continually expanding, ensuring there’s always a clinician available for those seeking care. Each of our clinicians maintain a small caseload so that we can provide the quality of care that our clients deserve. While some of our clinicians may occasionally have a brief waitlist, we’re committed to connecting you with an ideal therapist as soon as possible or helping you join the waitlist for a specific clinician if needed.

  • Get started by completing our secure online consultation form. Our Intake Coordinator will help match you with one of our clinicians.

  • Our practice serves toddlers through young adults throughout Florida.

Our primary specialties include ADHD, behavior disorders, parent-child relationships, anxiety and panic disorders, executive functioning, and therapy for young adults up to age 35. We provide psychological evaluations for individuals of all ages.

  • We hold a modern view of mental health treatment: one that is non-judgmental, warm, humorous, and most importantly, goal directed. We are firm believers in the healing powers of knowledge. Empowering our clients with the information they need to improve their wellbeing is the root of all our services.

We have a collaborative and therapeutic approach to assessment, with a focus on gathering only the most relevant data while emphasizing client strengths to determine the most effective supports for each client.

In therapy, we find that an eclectic approach works best, meaning we pull from a variety of theories and techniques.

We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and Mindfulness. We take an individualized treatment approach and collaborate with our clients on the best modalities for them.

Insurance & Finances

  • We no longer accept insurance. This was a difficult decision for us, as we understand that insurance can be a major consideration for many of our clients. The increasing limitations of coverage and frequently denied services to clients who actually need help is what ultimately led to our decision to end contracts with insurance companies. Further, the rigid guidelines of the insurance companies prevent an individualized treatment approach. We feel our clients deserve more than a one-size-fits all approach.

We are considered an out-of-network provider. Cost should never get in the way of therapy, which is why we help each client understand their out-of-network insurance benefits from the start. If you have a PPO plan and want to submit a claim for out-of-network reimbursement, we can give you a receipt, or a “superbill.” Please note that submitting an insurance claim means we will need to give you or your child a mental health diagnosis, which goes into your permanent health record with the insurance company.

  • Our fees are reflective of our expertise, years of experience, and highly specialized skill level, and are comparable to other doctoral-level psychologists in Florida who specialize in emotional and behavioral disorders.

    Intake Assessment: $300

Therapy with a Licensed Psychologist: $225

  • Yes! Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Savings Account (FSA) cards operate just like debit or credit cards in our client portal.

  • Being an out-of-network provider means we don’t bill insurance directly. Instead, you pay for sessions up front. If you would like to obtain reimbursement for your services from your insurance company, we will provide you a detailed receipt (called a superbill) that you can submit to them. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so we recommend calling your insurance company to ask about out-of-network mental health benefits.

  • Simply call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions: “Does my plan provide reimbursement for out-of-network mental health care?” “If so, is there a separate deductible?” “What percentage of out-of-network costs does my plan cover?” “Do I need pre-authorization for out-of-network services?” “Is there a limit to the number of sessions that will be reimbursed per year?” “How do I submit for out-of-network reimbursement?” You will then have all the information you need to determine what - if any - amount you are responsible for paying out of pocket for your therapy sessions.

  • On the first of the month, our Billing Specialist will send your superbill for the previous month’s therapy sessions through your secure, online client portal. The superbill will have all the codes and information your insurance company needs to process it for reimbursement. Then, simply download the superbill from your portal, and email/fax/submit it electronically to your insurance company.

  • Once you submit your superbill, your insurance plan will mail a check directly back to you to the mailing address they have on file for you.

Logistics & Cancellation Policy

  • For at least the first stage of therapy, sessions will be held weekly. Therapy works best within the context of a trusting and caring relationship. In our experience, it takes weekly sessions to create a consistent, secure and effective-enough container that allows for us to engage more deeply in the work and help you experience the change you desire. After the initial stage of therapy, biweekly sessions may become appropriate. You and your clinician will discuss what’s best at that time.

  • We understand that life can be unpredictable, particularly when children are involved. Whenever possible, we will try and work with your family’s schedule within the limitations of our cancellation policy. That being said, to get the most out of your investment with us, we recommend waiting to start therapy until you can commit to weekly sessions. This regularity helps build the foundation for effective progress. Ultimately, we value your well-being over anything else, even if that means delaying your start until the timing is right for you.

  • At the beginning of your work with us, a weekly meeting time will be agreed upon. That hour will be considered your time, reserved only for you. If you need to change your appointment time, your clinician will do what they can to accommodate you if at all possible. A minimum of 48 hours' notice is required for rescheduling or canceling an appointment. We offer one complimentary late cancellation; thereafter, any session canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice will incur the full session fee. Whenever possible, we will try and work with your family’s schedule within the limitations of our cancellation policy. In our experience, it is rare that this becomes an issue. This policy helps us maintain availability for all clients and respect the time of our clinicians. We may make exceptions at our discretion for emergency or unusual circumstances.

  • The first session fee is due at the time of booking. We collect this fee ahead of time to reserve your weekly spot on our schedule. You are allowed to reschedule intake and testing appointments up to one time before losing your booking fee. This policy ensures we remain available to clients who are committed and ready to start.

Our Matching Process

  • We take time to understand your child’s needs and your goals for seeking support. When you first reach out, we gather information about your child’s strengths, challenges, and what kind of support you’re looking for. Then, we match you with a clinician on our team who has experience with those specific concerns and is the right fit developmentally and relationally.

  • Yes. If you’ve been referred to someone specific or have a preference, let us know when you reach out. We’ll do our best to honor that, and we’ll also make sure the provider’s expertise is a match for your child’s needs.

  • Some concerns are best addressed by coaching parents on how to respond at home, while others benefit from direct therapy with the child or teen. We’ll help you determine which path (or combination) makes the most sense based on your goals and your child’s developmental stage.

  • Yes. All new clients participate in a 30-minute telehealth consultation with the provider to better understand each client’s needs and make sure we’re the right fit before starting treatment. It also gives you a chance to ask questions and feel more confident moving forward.

Our Programs

  • We specialize in emotional and behavioral challenges like big feelings, anxiety, attention issues, distractibility, overwhelm, irritability, and parent-child conflict. Many of the families we support are navigating ADHD, anxiety, and related concerns—even if there's no formal diagnosis yet.

  • We combine evidence-based care with a family-centered approach. That means we support both the child and the parent—because change is most effective when the whole system is involved. We also bring deep expertise in behavioral therapy, parent training, and developmentally appropriate care.

  • Yes. We offer a structured program that supports both attention and behavior. It includes skills-based therapy for the child or teen, as well as parent coaching to help you manage challenges at home. The goal is to reduce frustration, build emotional regulation, and improve follow-through with tasks. Click here to learn more about our Child and Teen ADHD Program.

  • Yes. SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is a parent-based treatment for anxiety and OCD. Instead of working directly with the child, we coach parents on how to respond in supportive ways that reduce avoidance and build the child’s confidence over time. SPACE is evidence-based as shown to be just as effective as individual therapy, which makes it super helpful for kids who refuse therapy or when individual therapy doesn’t work.

  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a research-based program for young children with behavior challenges like frequent tantrums, aggression, or defiance. In PCIT, we coach parents in real time to strengthen connection, improve cooperation, and reduce disruptive behavior. Learn more here.

Telehealth

  • Yes. Through secure video calls, you can connect with your clinician from the comfort of your home. In our experience, this virtual format eliminates barriers such as transportation and scheduling conflicts, making it easier for youth to engage in therapy.

  • Ideally, you will have a laptop or desktop but even a smartphone can work well for online video counseling. We use a HIPAA secure version of Google Meet for our Telehealth appointments. Your clinician will send you instructions about this platform before the start of your first session.

  • Yes! Studies show that online counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling for both adults and children. We have effectively treated many individuals and families virtually—with so much success that our clinicians have more Telehealth availability than in-person availability! For many families, our Telehealth options are the reasons they choose to work with us. Online counseling offers the flexibility and consistency needed to maintain effective care, even during busy or unpredictable seasons of life.

And still, whether you are in-person or video-conferencing, the two biggest factors that will make therapy effective are whether you and your therapist have a good bond and if they are well-trained in the issue areas you need support around.

  • While it makes sense to think nonverbal cues like body language may be difficult to interpret through a screen, these concerns reflect personal anxieties rather than actual limitations. In practice, trained mental health professionals are skilled at reading tone of voice, facial expressions, posture, and engagement—even through a screen. Kids and teens often feel more comfortable in their own environments, which can actually enhance openness and progress in therapy.

  • We welcome that! Despite many people thinking children lay down on our office couches and talk to us about their problems like adults, child therapy is designed to meet kids exactly where they are. By moving around and sharing their personal space—showing us their bedroom, introducing us to their pets—we gain incredible insight into their world, including their problems and frustrations. Also, with online counseling, we are able to involve parents directly in the session for live, in-the-moment coaching.

Aside from that, children today are used to communicating through screens. We use interactive games, toys, dance, educational videos, play therapy, mindfulness activities, and more to keep them engaged virtually. If there is a reason we feel like Telehealth won’t work for your child, we will tell you.

  • Probably! Some of our licensed psychologists are credentialed and approved by PSYPACT to see clients outside of the state of Florida—across at least 41 other states! To check if we are able to see you, please visit this link.

Our Tampa Office

  • Yes, some of our clinicians have availability for therapy in-person at our South Tampa office. All evaluation and testing appointments are held at the office, unless Telehealth is preferred. Tampa Pediatric Psychology is located at 205 S. Hoover Blvd. Tampa, Florida 33609 in the Tampa Marina Center building.

  • Tampa Pediatric Psychology is conveniently located and easily accessible to families throughout the Tampa Bay area. There is a parking lot outside the office with plenty of spaces.

  • Tampa Pediatric Psychology’s office is located in the Tampa Marina Center, a waterfront building surrounded by several picnic tables and shaded trees—perfect for relaxing before or after your session, or while waiting for your child’s evaluation!

Evaluations

  • If you’ve noticed ongoing challenges with attention, learning, behavior, or emotional regulation—and you’re unsure why—it may be time for an evaluation. Assessments can help clarify what’s going on and guide next steps for school support, therapy, or other services. Some issues are more apparent from the start such as separation anxiety and do not always need a comprehensive assessment. If you’re still unsure, reach out and we will help you decide.

  • We offer psychoeducational, neuropsychological, developmental, and psychological assessment services. We evaluate for common childhood concerns like ADHD, autism, learning disorders such as dyslexia, anxiety, and social-emotional functioning. We also offer early childhood assessments for developmental delays and school readiness.

  • Our evaluations include detailed reports and clear recommendations that can be shared with schools to support IEPs, 504 Plans, or other learning accommodations.

Confidentiality

  • Yes. Your family’s privacy is important to us. Information you share in therapy or during an evaluation is confidential and protected by law. We will never share details with anyone—school, doctors, or others—without your written permission. This is one reason we do not work with insurance companies.

  • Not unless you choose to share that information. We won’t contact teachers, schools, or other providers unless you’ve given us written consent to do so.

  • Yes. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform to protect your privacy. Just like in-person sessions, everything shared during a virtual session is confidential.

Working with Children

  • We use a mix of evidence-based approaches like behavioral therapy and parent-child interaction therapy to help kids build emotional regulation, communication, and cooperation skills in a developmentally appropriate way. Sometimes this looks like play therapy and other times we’ll work directly with parents.

  • Yes. In fact, parent involvement is one of the most important parts of treatment for young children. You’ll learn practical strategies to support your child at home, and we’ll work together to create consistency across settings.

  • We work with children who struggle with tantrums, anxiety, big emotions, aggression, sleep issues, and attention challenges. Even without a diagnosis, we can help you understand what’s going on and give you tools to support your child.

Working with Teens

  • For teens, therapy is a space to explore emotions, build coping skills, and talk about what’s going on without pressure or judgment. We use approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure strategies, and values-based work to help teens manage anxiety, motivation, school stress, and social issues.

  • Yes, but in a way that respects your teen’s growing need for independence. We’ll keep you in the loop on goals and progress, while also giving your teen a safe space to express themselves. When appropriate, we may bring parents into sessions to strengthen communication or problem-solve together. We also often provide parent coaching for parents of teens to equip you with strategies for managing difficult teen behaviors.

  • We support teens facing anxiety, academic stress, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, perfectionism, low motivation, panic, depression, social anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and attention-related challenges. Many teens we work with are high-achieving but feel burnt out, stuck, or disconnected.
