Therapy for College Students in tampa, FL

How Therapy Helps College Students Navigate Anxiety, Identity, and the Pressure to Have It All Figured Out

College is supposed to be one of the best years of your life. And for many students, there are real moments of growth, connection, and excitement. But there is also a side that doesn't always make it into the campus brochure—the anxiety that shows up at 2am, the pressure to know who you are and what you want, the loneliness that can exist even in a crowded apartment, and the sense that everyone else seems to be handling things just fine.

If college has felt harder than expected, you are not alone—and you don't have to wait until things get worse to get support.

CBT is based on a well-established principle:

As mental health professionals with decades of schooling, we get it. That’s why we created a safe space just for you.

College can be a time filled with many unknowns and life transitions. We work with college students and young adults on managing anxiety and stress, relationship concerns, improving coping skills, productivity while balancing perfectionism, improving self-esteem, and how to clarify life values and create more meaning. Our clients are used to doing it all (and doing it well) on their own, but want to be more effective in managing life stressors and live happier and more peaceful lives.

Academic stress may be the single most dominant stress factor that affects the mental well-being of college students.

The college years are a significant developmental window—a time when identity, values, relationships, and life direction are actively being formed. The stress of that process is real: academic pressure, social comparison, family expectations, financial concerns, and relationship challenges. Therapy gives you tools, perspective, and a private space to work through what college is bringing up, so you can move forward with more clarity and confidence.

What College Students Come To Therapy For

College life comes with a unique set of pressures that are often minimized or normalized, but that doesn't mean they aren't real. You might recognize some of these:

  • Anxiety that spikes around exams, deadlines, or social situations, and doesn't fully go away between them

  • Trouble sleeping, concentrating, or feeling present even when nothing is overtly "wrong"

  • A persistent feeling of being behind, not good enough, or like you're falling short of expectations

  • Social anxiety, loneliness, or difficulty forming the kind of connections you were hoping for

  • Struggling with identity: who you are, what you actually want, or whether you're on the right path

  • Using alcohol, substances, or avoidance to cope with stress or difficult emotions

  • Feeling pressure from family about your major, grades, future plans, or lifestyle choices

  • Processing something hard — a breakup, a loss, a difficult experience at school

  • Wondering if you might have ADHD, anxiety, or depression that has never been formally addressed

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many college students seek support simply because they want to understand themselves better and handle the demands of this season of life more effectively.

College Therapy in Tampa, Fl

College is a major life transition. You don't have to figure out who you're becoming entirely on your own.

Many students get by semester after semester, managing just enough to keep moving. But managing isn't the same as thriving. Therapy during college is about understanding yourself more clearly, developing real coping tools, and investing in the version of yourself that will carry forward long after graduation.

What Therapy Is Like at Tampa Psychology

We know your schedule is complicated. You're balancing classes, work, relationships, and a social life—and finding time for therapy can feel like just another thing on the list. We work to make the process as accessible and genuinely useful as possible.

When you start therapy, we don't jump straight into problem-solving. The first sessions are about getting to know you—your background, what's been showing up recently, what you've already tried, and what you actually want to get out of the process. We care about the full picture, not just a checklist of symptoms.

From there, we work collaboratively. Depending on your goals and what you're experiencing, we may draw on evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or other approaches tailored to what you need. Sessions are practical, grounded in your real life, and focused on skills and insights that carry over outside the therapy room.

We also understand that the issues college students bring to therapy are rarely separate from each other—anxiety, identity questions, academic pressure, relationship patterns, and family dynamics often show up together. Our therapists are equipped to work with that complexity.

Therapy is available in-person at our Tampa office or via telehealth for students anywhere in Florida. For students attending school outside of Florida,PSYPACT licensure allows Dr. Edwards to work with clients across 40+ states, making it possible to maintain continuity of care even during breaks, semesters abroad, or after graduation.

If you’re ready to gain more self-awareness, manage thoughts and feelings, learn coping skills for anxiety & stress, and find more genuine happiness and purpose in life — you’re in the right place. 🫶🏼

Your twenties and thirties are a fun, yet challenging phase of life filled with many overwhelming changes. We understand the challenges of managing schoolwork, careers, family, and increasing responsibilities while trying to fully experience your “best years”. We often work with high school seniors and college students on stress and anxiety management, ADHD issues, friendship and relationship issues, college/work preparation, perfectionism, improving self-esteem, and how to clarify life values and create a more meaningful life.

Attending graduate or medical school is challenging enough. Having an anxiety or ADHD while attending graduate school can become exhausting, self-defeating, and stressful. As doctoral level psychologists, we understand the challenges higher education students are faced with regularly including the difficulties in balancing work/family life, imposter syndrome, the expectations of performing to unreasonably high standards, and the stress of applying and interviewing for each new position, as well as issues specific to mental health such as panic attacks, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and perfectionism.

Our Therapeutic Style for College Students and Young Adult Therapy

Our psychologists hold a modern view of mental health treatment. One that is holistic, person-centered, non-judgmental, and most importantly, goal directed. We are firm believers in the healing powers of knowledge, and you will often find us sharing bits of neuroscience and evidence-based information in our sessions aimed at helping you discover meaningful solutions to your problems. While talk therapy and emotional support have their time and place in our treatment sessions, we primarily view therapy as a space for clients to immerse themselves in knowledge regarding their issues.

Why? Because we know that clients who are knowledgeable and educated about their symptoms make better and faster progress. Knowledge is power, and we believe therapy should be productive in that you leave our sessions feeling more knowledgable and thus empowered to create your desired change. We recognize that therapy is an investment of both time and money, and we believe in holding ourselves accountable to supporting our clients in improving their overall quality of life in the most efficient way possible.

Common Questions About Therapy for College Students

Is therapy at Tampa Psychology different from my school's counseling center?

Many college counseling centers provide valuable short-term support, but they are often limited in session availability, scope of services, or ability to provide longer-term or specialized care. Tampa Psychology offers ongoing therapy with licensed doctoral-level psychologists who have specialized training in the issues college students face. We also offer psychological testing and evaluation services, which are not always available through campus counseling centers.

1

What if I've never been to therapy before?

Many college students come to therapy for the first time during their college years often because it's the first time they've had the autonomy to seek support on their own terms. You don't need any prior therapy experience. In the first few sessions, we'll spend time understanding your situation and what you're hoping to get out of the process. There's no pressure, no judgment, and no expectation that you have everything figured out before you walk in.

2

Do you work with students from USF, UT, or other Tampa-area schools?

Yes. We work with college students from across the Tampa Bay area, including those attending the University of South Florida, The University of Tampa, Hillsborough Community College, and other local institutions. We also work with students attending school anywhere in Florida via telehealth.

3

What if I go home for the summer or study abroad?

This is a common concern for college students. Dr. Kristin Edwards is a PSYPACT-authorized psychologist, which means she is licensed to provide telehealth services in 40+ states across the country. This allows many students to maintain continuity of care when they are outside of Florida during breaks or transitions. We'll work with you to find a solution that keeps your care consistent.

4

Can you test me for ADHD or a learning disorder?

Yes. Tampa Psychology offers comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations, including testing for ADHD, learning disorders, and executive functioning challenges. Many college students come to us having suspected these issues for years but never received a formal evaluation. A clear diagnosis can open the door to academic accommodations, appropriate treatment, and a much better understanding of how your brain works.

5

What if I'm not sure I'm "struggling enough" to come in?

You don't need to be in crisis to come to therapy. Many of the students we work with are high-functioning, capable people who want to understand themselves better, handle stress more effectively, or work through something that's been sitting in the background. If something has been weighing on you, that's reason enough. Reaching out early, before things escalate, is one of the most effective things you can do.

6

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything you share in therapy is protected by professional confidentiality. There are narrow legal exceptions, primarily related to imminent safety concerns, but your therapist will explain those fully at the start of treatment. Your parents, professors, advisors, and peers will not have access to anything you discuss in sessions.

7

Who can benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

CBT can be helpful for children, teens, and adults experiencing anxiety, stress, emotional overwhelm, attention-related challenges, behavioral difficulties, or persistent negative thinking patterns.

Because CBT focuses on practical skills, many people find it helpful not only for managing symptoms but also for improving confidence, resilience, and everyday problem-solving.
