Our Approach to
Adolescent Therapy

Our psychologists primarily uses a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach. CBT is a research-supported gold standard intervention for anxiety and depression in childhood, as well as anger management and emotion regulation. CBT helps teens increase their awareness of their own emotions, teaches them to think about what thoughts are tied to their emotions (and to check whether those thoughts are accurate or helpful), and builds their ability to use mindfulness strategies and cool-down tools to help themselves stay grounded in difficult moments instead of getting swept away by worry or big emotions.

We see teens as being part of a family system, and parents as integral partners in supporting children’s success. Alongside individual therapy, we provide parents with a plan for how best to support their child outside of the therapy appointment.

We also work with college students & young adults and younger children.

Individual Therapy

We offer individual therapy for children ages four and up who are experiencing challenges with anxiety, negative mood, self-esteem, and emotion regulation. Our experienced therapists use short-term, evidence-based treatment approaches that focus on teaching kids skills that they can continue to use and practice after therapy is complete— and personalize these approaches to best meet the needs and goals of each child and family.

S.P.A.C.E. Treatment

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is an evidence-based treatment program for children and teens with anxiety, OCD, and related problems. Our founder, Dr. Kristin Edwards, was trained in SPACE by the treatment developer, Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center. SPACE is a treatment that empowers parents to support their child's ability to tolerate anxious feelings, connect with their own inner resources and become strong, independent humans.

Parent Coaching

We provide parents with a judgement-free space to feel more effective and empowered in their approach to parenting. We will help you better understand how your teenager’s developmental state may be impacting their behaviors. Parent coaching will provide you with strengths-based, attachment-driven strategies to lovingly set limits with your teen, while increasing your attunement to their emotional needs. Additionally, we provide you the space to process your own experiences of parenting and learn how to increase your self-care in order to allow your child to borrow your calm during teenage outbursts.

ADHD & EF Coaching

We specialize in treatment of brain-based problems like ADHD and executive function disorder and have successfully worked with young adults and children ages 13+ to help them learn organization and behavior change skills, and ultimately how to stay on track. Our sessions also address common co-morbid disorders such as anxiety and depression given that many teens with ADHD lack confidence about their school performance or feel negatively about their inability to live up to their true potential.

What to Expect

We typically start with an parent consultation to hear more about your concerns and goals for working together. We then work with kids on a weekly basis, with additional parent-only sessions every four to six weeks. We often pair children and parents with each their own therapist to maintain the trust between your child and their therapist while still being able to support parents closely. Outside of regular check ins with parents and kids about progress, we often include three to five sessions dedicated to teaching parents strategies they can use to help their child at home and school. For most kids, weekly individual treatment lasts four to six months. We discontinue treatment when we all agree that the child and their family has met their goals for treatment and are ready to fly independently. We’re always here if your child runs into new challenges or hurdles down the road.

Cost Per Session

Cost per session varies depending on the clinician’s license level. The cost for all one-time initial intake sessions is $300. This session is 45-60 minutes in length and also requires your provider to spend time outside of session reviewing records and background information, and developing a treatment plan. Cost of recurring sessions following this initial intake appointment ranges from $125 to $225 per session. For more information on our fee schedule, click here.

Details About Insurance

We are a private pay practice and do not directly bill insurance for treatment. Some benefits of paying privately include more privacy and more control in our work together. However, we’ve found that many insurance companies will cover our services as out-of-network providers. If you have a PPO, we can provide a “super bill” that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. A super bill is a detailed record of payment with special codes for what kind of service was provided along with our license number. Our Billing Specialist can call your insurance to find out what reimbursement will look like for you, if desired. If you’re hoping to find an in-network provider, Good Therapy or Psychology Today are helpful directories.
