On average, families see improvement in as little as 4 to 5 sessions.
Parenting a child with big emotions, anxiety, ADHD, defiance, impulsivity, or frequent meltdowns can feel exhausting. You may be trying to stay calm, set limits, avoid constant power struggles, and help your child cope, while also feeling unsure what actually works.
At Tampa Pediatric Psychology, parent training helps parents better understand their child’s behavior and respond with strategies that are supportive, consistent, and effective.
What Is Parent Behavior Training?
Parent training, sometimes called parent management training or behavior parent training, is an evidence-based approach that helps parents respond more effectively to emotional and behavioral challenges.
Parent training teaches parents how to shape behavior through consistent expectations, positive reinforcement, effective instructions, predictable consequences, and improved parent-child interaction patterns. Parents learn strategies for strengthening positive behavior, setting clear expectations, reducing power struggles, responding to meltdowns, and supporting emotional regulation.
Parent sessions can help you understand when to comfort, when to coach, when to set limits. For children with ADHD, parent sessions may focus on routines, executive functioning, motivation, emotional regulation, school stress, and reducing shame.

Is Parent Training the Same as Therapy for my Child?
Parent training can be a standalone service or part of your child’s therapy plan. For most children, parent involvement is often one of the most important parts of treatment because parents are the ones helping children practice skills in real life.
Some children benefit most from individual therapy. Others benefit more when parents are the primary focus of treatment, especially when the main concerns are behavior, routines, emotional outbursts, anxiety accommodations, or parent-child conflict.
During the intake process, we help determine whether your family would benefit most from parent training, child therapy, PCIT, SPACE treatment, CBT-based therapy, or another type of support.

Empowering children and families with tools to heal and grow—so you can start looking forward to brighter tomorrows, together.
Parent training begins with an intake appointment to understand your child’s concerns, family routines, developmental history, parenting stress, and goals. From there, we create a plan that may include parent-only sessions, family sessions, child sessions, or a combination of supports.
