What Type of Evaluation Does my Child Need?

Psychoeducational Evaluation

A psychoeducational evaluation can provide clear answers about your child’s functioning, and why they may fall behind on certain tasks. These assessments focus on the identification of learning disabilities related to reading, writing, and math, dyslexia, ADHD, and social-emotional behavior impacting academics and learning. TPP’s evaluations are often used to provide academic supports such as provision of an IEP or 504 accommodation plan, academic tutoring, and additional time for testing and academic work.

Psychological Evaluation, ADHD Testing, Anxiety Assessment, Social/Emotional Evaluation

Psychological assessment is a service that identifies mental health disorders through a combination of interviews, parent and self-report measures, and psychological batteries. The results help to rule out certain types of psychopathology and other long-term mental health issues. This testing is different from a psychoeducational assessment in that we are primarily looking for non-learning related disorders such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Testing for Accommodations

If your child has a learning disability or a mental health diagnosis with substantial impairment, they may be eligible to apply for accommodations on college-entrance achievement tests such as SAT and ACT. Psychological testing provides answers about potential learning disabilities, attention problems, and other factors that may prevent your child from performing their best on academic and professional examinations. Those answers can then be used to request accommodations to be made for future exams.

Gifted Testing

TPP offers psychological assessment that meets the requirements for consideration of gifted programming in public schools. If a child indeed displays a performance indicative of giftedness, several recommendations may be appropriate including exploring schooling options more compatible for gifted children, recommendations for a child’s current school setting to meet the child’s needs, and recommendations for parents as to strategies and services to best support their child’s growth and development.
